The Rare Instance When Beavers Spoil a Party

You’re probably wondering why we haven’t announced the winner of our Frozen Four identity challenge from last week. It’s simple: we didn’t have a winner. We had 127 submissions (thank you, all), and plenty of varied brackets. A lot of … Continue reading

Who’s Playing Whom, and What It Means

As the season winds down, much attention is given to the likely first-round pairings. What team would the Capitals least like to face, or whom would they match up with the best? Would Capitals fans like to see a Battle of Pennsylvania in the first round to ensure one of their fiercest rivals fall early?
But the regular season isn’t over yet, and the remaining games are not only opportunities to tune up for the playoffs but also have seeding implications. So instead, let’s examine who’s playing whom before the playoffs. Continue reading

Now This Is My Type of Madness!

You want madness? I’ll give you madness. How about not one, not two, but three no. 1 seeds in the NCAA’s field of hockey 16 falling to no. 4s before the tourney was 40 hours old this weekend? Or how about not one but two sweet 16 showdowns featuring tying goals scored with less than one second left in the game? Even better: Neither Billy Packer nor Dick Vitale was calling any of them.
All that college hockey produced before the weekend was half over was its most dramatic postseason in the history of the sport. Continue reading

Brian Pothier’s Return To Glory

For much of this hockey season Caps’ defenseman Brian Pothier sat quite near what’s known as the “Blogger’s Ghetto” in the Verizon Center press box. I never approached him to ask any questions about his health and hockey hopes — to be blunt, the answers seemed too apparent and pessimistic. Unhappy Trails, Don Koharski: The Game Will Be Better Off Without You

In a few days, NHL referee Don Koharski will raise his arm in signal for a phantom infraction for the final time in regular season play. The league of course will fete Koharski with all manner of praise and congratulations for his career, as will, perhaps, the NHLPA. Perhaps. But count me among the thousands of hockey fans who, while acknowledging Koharski’s commitment to his profession, and the very real injuries he incurred and sacrifices he made in its execution, won’t miss him one iota on opening night next season.
Koharski started in the NHL as a linesman in 1977, and by 1980 he’d earned the duties of a referee. He’s made few admirers since. Continue reading

A Bit of Local Flavor for College Hockey

Had Langway chosen to go to South Bend he would have been teammates with both Joe Montana and Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. He also could have been a member of the 1977 national championship team. Continue reading
