Capitals Moving Up A Peg
Tonight’s hard-fought Eastern Conference Finals victory by the Boston Bruins assures one thing: The Capitals are moving up… on a list they’d rather not be on in the first place.
The Vancouver Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup. The Boston Bruins last won in 1972. Therefore, regardless of who wins the 2011 Stanley Cup, the Capitals will find themselves in 6th place on the list of teams with the longest Stanley Cup droughts. Continue reading

Who’ve You Got?
As the pain of the Caps’ loss fades to a dull ache, I find myself watching the Bruins-Lightning series with great interest. It’s exciting stuff—unpredictable, fast-paced, and… confusing. Because while I’m a fan of neither team, I still like to pick a horse if I’m going to bother watching a race. Whom to pick?
My wife takes a simple yet elegant approach: root for whoever’s losing at that exact moment. Stay with that team while they’re losing or tied… then switch to the other team if the lead changes. Effective, if a bit murky before the game’s first goal. Continue reading

Thin Skinned Down in the Sunshine State: Clever Bruins Smack Gets Silenced
My eternal problem with the Southeast division: There are no rivalries in it in any way approaching those we once enjoyed with our predecessor Patrick division, and subsequently, I can’t summon the hate. And in instances as with what a … Continue reading
Righting a Wrong
I owe Ted Leonsis an apology. A big one. It was a lengthy State of the Caps address he offered on line on Thursday, more than an hour long, and getting merely most of his reflections represented accurately here isn’t … Continue reading

A State of the Nation That Comes Up Small
On May 5, the morning after his hockey team had been swept out of the playoffs in the second round by the no. 5 seed, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, to his credit, logged in to his blog, congratulated the victorious … Continue reading
The First Shoe Has Fallen
An agreement to sell the National Hockey League’s Atlanta Thrashers to a Winnipeg group which plans to relocate the franchise to the Manitoba capital is done.
Sources confirmed tonight that preparations are being made for an announcement Tuesday, confirming the sale and transfer of the Thrashers to True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns and operates the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League and the MTS Centre arena, which would become the NHL team’s new home. Renewed Questions of Leadership
Deep into Tuesday night, a prominent member of Washington’s hockey media, referencing the Boston Bruins’ effort in game 2 of the Eastern conference finals, emailed me this reflection: “This is what a desperate team is supposed to look like down … Continue reading
Crash Course Indeed: Red Bull’s Crashed Ice
It’s the Winter Classic meeting the X Games, I guess, but it’s also sorta like racing down a bobsled or luge track in hockey skates: Red Bull’s Crashed Ice competition, which dates back about a decade but only recently came … Continue reading

Wishing for a Special Forces Mindset
Big news — the Red Wings are out of the playoffs, prematurely. Prematurely for them of course is anything short of securing the Cup. The seasons change, some faces change, the objective though for the Wings ever remains the same. … Continue reading
