Per the Washington Capitals, the team “will make a significant player-related announcement on Monday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m.” According to Pierre LeBrun, the team will “announce a contract extension for star center Nicklas Backstrom, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com.” Tarik reports that the deal will likely be in “the high $6 million per year range,” though at this time no word on the length of the deal.

That would be awesome, although GMGM doesn’t especially like long term deals — hope this one is at least 4-5 years. And it should allow Caps to keep Fehr, jettison Flash.
