The Creation of a Culture for Winning

It’s a queer feeling, moving about Washington in this the season of the calendar of our perpetual discontent, and actually feeling good about the Capitals’ chances. This morning, well post cherry blossoms, I have a startling message to convey: We … Continue reading

Suspension of Disbelief

Right as Washington was settling in for a spring-delayed/prolonged winter weekend last night came word (via Twitter, necessarily) of some manner of meteor shower, or meteor explosion, high in the sky above the capital. For those watching the hockey televised … Continue reading

John Carlson Explains the Weirdest Goal Ever; And Where to Start With the Caps?

Just dump the puck in. That’s what Capitals defenseman John Carlson was thinking when he sent it into the Pens’ zone in the second period and headed for the bench. It had been a long shift, and he was just … Continue reading

An Evolution, and Event, To Savor

Of the NHL’s 30 member clubs merely five remain alive in the quest for Stanley, and one of them is ours. That’s a remarkable and wonderful thing, relative to the Capitals’ standing of just two months ago, but better still … Continue reading

A Peek Inside What Caps Players See in Hunter

People can dissect the Dale Hunter plus/minus comment regarding Mike Knuble to their heart’s content; the odd call up (twice) of Joel Rechlicz; and the equally odd call up of Braden Holtby; it’s all fair game for analysis (and when you figure out a logical answer, please give me a call). But the other side of the coin is to figure out if the guys feel they’re growing under Hunter’s tutelage.

Caps Casino Night isn’t really the venue for asking serious hockey questions, but Karl Alzner, Matt Hendricks, Jay Beagle and Mike Green were accommodating nonetheless. Alzner also had some interesting insight into what Hunter’s locker room directives are like between periods in-game (since HBO 24/7 isn’t there to show us). The guys’ comments don’t answer a lot of the aforementioned questions, but they provide an interesting angle to consider in the current state of the Capitals. Continue reading

The Club That’s Needed Has Been Built

The sort of Capitals club I’d want to see contest an NHL postseason would be able to roll four lines almost interchangeably, impact achieved rather uniformly among them, and cumulatively, deliver an impact that wears down a quality opponent the … Continue reading
