Home Stretch: Caps Get a Taste of Playoff-Style Hockey in Thursday’s Loss

It seems odd to lead off talking about a game the Capitals lost on a penalty kill in overtime by praising said penalty kill units.

But if it hadn’t been for some quality shorthanded time by Washington Thursday, a tight contest could have devolved into a serious letdown.

In their 2-1 loss to Ottawa, the Capitals ended up with their biggest total of minor penalties since March 22, and their largest total of penalty minutes overall since February 21, although Thursday’s numbers included a 10-minute misconduct for Jason Chimera. Continue reading →

A Night at the Nats Game

On Saturday, I was extremely fortunate to score a ticket to the President’s Club with my friend L. and the gentlemen of Two In The Box. I wasn’t sure what to expect, except that I knew it was going to be awesome. And I wasn’t disappointed. From the prime rib to the lobster mac ‘n cheese, the food was completely amazing. The views of the indoor batting cages and the press conference room were exciting. The in-seat delivery of food and beverages was helpful. But best of all was seeing Brooks Laich, John Carlson, and Karl Alzner (and his girlfriend) at the game. Continue reading →

Caps’ Coaches Had Team Ready to Play in Game 3

It was over 100 minutes of blood and a whole lot of sweat, punctuated by brief respites where players could recharge, refuel, and rehydrate.
The happy ending for the hard-working Rangers—53-plus minutes for Ryan McDonagh—doesn’t negate the fact that the Capitals came to play, and their coaching staff had every guy on their roster ready to contribute. Continue reading →

A Peek Inside What Caps Players See in Hunter

People can dissect the Dale Hunter plus/minus comment regarding Mike Knuble to their heart’s content; the odd call up (twice) of Joel Rechlicz; and the equally odd call up of Braden Holtby; it’s all fair game for analysis (and when you figure out a logical answer, please give me a call). But the other side of the coin is to figure out if the guys feel they’re growing under Hunter’s tutelage.

Caps Casino Night isn’t really the venue for asking serious hockey questions, but Karl Alzner, Matt Hendricks, Jay Beagle and Mike Green were accommodating nonetheless. Alzner also had some interesting insight into what Hunter’s locker room directives are like between periods in-game (since HBO 24/7 isn’t there to show us). The guys’ comments don’t answer a lot of the aforementioned questions, but they provide an interesting angle to consider in the current state of the Capitals. Continue reading →
