I still remember OFB posting – was it a couple years ago? – that Dale Hunter might be just the person to inject toughness, esp. at playoff time, back into the Capitals. And I think you all were right, even if they didn’t get farther than last season.

I mean, it feels better than not showing up in Game 7 at all (Pittsburgh, 2009), blowing a 3-1 series lead in the first round (Montreal, 2010), or getting swept in the second round Tampa Bay, 2010). And of those three opponents, Pittsburgh lost in the first round this year, and Montreal and Tampa both failed to make the playoffs.

But in the end we’re all left wondering, and still nostalgic for 1998. I am eager to see who OFB might favor as a coaching candidate now, since I think you all were on target about Dale. 🙂

How is losing to Pittsburgh in 2009 and then the Pens losing in the first round in 2012, losing to Montreal in 2010 and getting swept by Tampa Bay (which was 2011 btw not 2010) and neither of those teams making the playoffs this year relevant?
What if the Rags win the Stanley Cup? Then would you say it feels better that they beat the Rags in 5 in 2011 and the Rags got to the conference finals and then won the cup?
I fail to understand your logic and reasoning there.
Also, 2/3rds of a year and two rounds of the playoffs isn’t a whole lot of history to go by especially when you consider how well Holtby played in the playoffs. When you have a hot goalie (which Holtby certainly was), you can beat anyone.

How exactly was OFB right about Hunter? He coached less than one season! Obviously a great player for the franchise ..but definitely a blip on the coaching radar screen. I would say hiring him actually set back the franchise some because now we are back at square one.
