Man I taped this and just finished it up about the same time it happened live. Crazy game. I think the Caps finally solved Halak, about 52 minutes after the Canadiens solved Theo.
I’m tired, elated, upset? Can we somehow sign Backstrom for FOREVER this summer, trade Green for a shutdown man, and give Carlson 5 million per for the next 18 years? Seriously, Green is treating the playoffs like a first time mother treats her baby. How about a sprawl on the 2 on 1 to make it 5-4? Frankly, I’m speechless. See you in Montreal.
You’re right Hitt. I’m not sure if Green is nervous or if he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a post-season d-man in the NHL (it’s no easy task I’m sure). I thought that he was coming around during the last half of the regular season and finally playing a more complete game, but it looks like he’s reverted back to being the defensive liability that couldn’t play Canadian Olympic hockey, making stupid plays and seemingly forgetting the defensive bread and butter-type skills. He’s consistently been a very good offensive player, but I don’t think that one excuses the other.
The more interesting question for me though is who plays in goal in Montreal. I know the comparisons to last season will be there in the morning, so I’ll leave that for someone else. I do think that you have to go back with Theodore for game 3. He got beat by two good shots, but he has something to prove in Montreal and he’s shown us over the last 2 months that he has what it takes. If you sit him out now, his confidence will be shot and you won’t get any use out of him at all this post-season.
Big props to JC, Backstrom, and Tom Poti tonight. Huge game from those guys. Great poise from the kid, clutch leadership when we needed it from Poti (that fight was the turning point in the contest), and what else needs to be said about Backstrom…the guy’s got game.

I think Barry Melrose’s postgame comments were spot on. If the Caps keep playing like they have they won’t win another game in this series. Make no mistake they stole the game tonight and probably didn’t deserve to win. There’s simply no excuse anymore for not putting together a 60-minute effort.
Also, I have never been a fan of Theodore. As sharp as he may have been in the regular season he has a marked tendency to fold when it counts most. Conversely I think Varly seizes his opportunities and the players play with more confidence when he’s back there. Sure he had a few rough outings but he was shaking off his rust post-injury.
I thought Green was poised to make amends for last year, but he’s reverted back to his old ways which doesn’t bode well for the Caps. I think their best chance to put away the Habs is to unleash the fury of an offensive explosion, and to do that put their shots high on Halak until he can make a save there. If I recall all but Ovie’s shove in goal went top shelf on the Habs goalie, and this sort of thing has to continue.
I’m wondering too who Coach BB will start in goal in Montreal. Theo had his clock cleaned tonight, and who knows what his mind set will be facing his old team.
Can I give three cheers again to Nick Backstrom who deserved the #1 star? Now if Ovie, the real Ovie is back, and Nick can continue hitting the goal twine, and if Semin and some others on the so-called potent Caps offense can awaken in time, the Caps just might have enough to get past the Habs.
Better lucky than good. I think Theo was pulled partly as message to rest of team.
# 52 better be “injured” for the rest of the playoffs. He was on the ice for most of the Montreal goals. Hopefully this quells any talk of him getting a certain trophy. # 52 must have some real good blackmail on BB to keep getting that amount of icetime. Keith Jones ripped him to shreds on the intermission before OT.

I’ll make this clear for all the apologists and bandwagonners out there:
MIKE GREEN IS NOT, NEVER HAS BEEN AND NEVER WILL BE A NHL DEFENSEMAN.
I’ll interrupt the “throw anyone under the bus after 2 games” party (trade Green! trade Semin! Trade every player whose screwup led to a goal – oops that’s about the entire team), to point out Boudreau admitted in the press conference that Green needed to play the body more (as he had in the 2nd half of the regular season), close the gaps and stop relying on hit-or-miss poke checks. BB said he’d get that point across to Green in video review sessions. So lets see if that sinks into Green’s head.
I’d be more concerned he and Semin (who did at least get some decent shots off Saturday) are so absent on the score sheet.
It is only game three, with the series tied. I have complete confidence that they will all show up in due time (sooner the better), they know how to win, but need to play 60 minutes of high-quality hockey.Green will be awesome, and Semin will make room for himself.

Props to Superman er Backstrom, OV, Knuble, Fehr, Chimera and Carlson for their stellar play so far.
Stop worrying about Semin. He just needs that first goal and he’ll be fine.
Funny how Caps fans are so quick to dismiss Theo after the amazing run he’s had since January. I thought yanking him after the two goals (neither of which he had a chance on) was a panic move.
