Nylander Assists the Griffins

Michael Nylander played in his first game of the season … as a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Griffins beat the Abbotsford Heat 5 to 3. Nylander assisted on 3 of the Griffins’ goals on the road to being named the 2nd star of the game.

He was also on the ice for all 3 of the Heat’s goals, too. Sorry about that…. I looked at the box score too quickly while trying to fix the mess of a blog the transition left us and didn’t pay attention to the power play assists. Mea Culpa. -GK

Last night was free preview night for AHL Live so I watched the Griffins game. I thought Nylander did good, esp. since it has been a while since he was in the game. One of the passes for an assist on the power play was really sweet. Watching that game made me think that there is a lot more to the Nylander story than the “he doesn’t fit the Caps system” party line as Nylander was able to work well with these new teammates in such a short time. As for being on the ice for the goals against, I wouldn’t put the blame on Nylander. The Griffins pulled their goalie after the first two goals.

You guys sure he was on the ice for all 3 GA? Nylander was even for the night, all 3 points came on the PP (so no + there) and Grand rapids only scored 1 ES goal while allowing 2 ES goals against. Had Nylander been on the ice for the goals against he would have ended up at the very least a -1 for the night, – 2 if he wasn’t on the ice for the lone GR even strength goal.

  3. Sombrero Guy says:

actually, the stat sheet cleary shows that Nylander was not on the ice for any of the GA. Check the column to the right of the goals info.

You guys looking at some different box score? Because on the one y’all linked to, #92 was on the ice for only the three goals he assisted on.

“He was also on the ice for all 3 of the Heat’s goals, too.”

Ah… dang it.. you are right…. his assists were power play points and thus didn’t count in the plus / minus… thanks for the correction. Looked at the box score too quickly while trying to fix the mess of a blog MVN left us. 😦
