A Former Capital Embarrasses Himself

The New York Islanders’ Brendan Witt shows little respect for the game (or his fellow players) with this concussion-causing elbow to  Nicklas Hagman.

Look, I’m no prude when it comes to tough on-ice play and hard hits,
but Witt seems to go out of his way to pop Hagman’s jaw with an elbow. And why? Because he was racing (relatively) to the puck, out of position, and apparently thought an elbow to someone’s head was an acceptable defensive play. Terrible.

Mark your calendars for the next Islanders-Leafs tilt (Tuesday,
March 10th, in Toronto) . . . should be a very interesting game (well, maybe not much fun for Witt).

Brutal decision by Witt, there’s no doubt – but I would argue (I did so here) that it’s the NHL that should be the most embarrassed. The five game decision is a farce and shows that the league has chosen to prefer bucks over brains by turning the whole thing into a circus sideshow rather than trying to send a message to protect the players.

Agreed Junior, the NHL needed to step up with a much more significant reaction than 5 games. I actually expected them to nail Witt to the wall, since they wouldn’t be hurting a playoff team… ah well.
