In what could be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship, The Washington Capitals are offering their fans a special offer in support of D.C. United. The two sports’ seasons have a little overlap, so this cross-marketing partnership could be a good thing to both clubs.
For anyone who has been to a DC Untied game, can you imagine a hockey game with the non-stop enthusiasm of Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles? Unconventional for North American Hockey, but it would be fun.
And how this came about is even more unconventional….. from a Washington Post Blogger.
Dan Steinberg’s blog gets praise from both the Washington Capitals fans as well as the fans of DC United for his unprecedented coverage of both teams. In his Oct 23rd post, he encouraged Caps fans to attend the DC United playoff game.
You United and Caps people seem to have a lot in common: you think the Washington Post undercovers your team, you occasionally read my blog, you like alcohol, you don’t like teams from New York. This is a natural love connection.
After contacting him regarding his United-Caps mashup campaign, Steinberg heard back from Ted Leonsis.
I got an e-mail from Caps owner Ted Leonsis this morning, reporting that he intends to reach out to United President Kevin Payne ASAP in an effort to get some cross-marketing in place, possibly as soon as this weekend.
Then today I received an email from the Washington Capitals with this special offer.
…you’ll receive discount pricing and a FREE MLS signature soccer ball with each order.
How’s that for putting a marketing campaign together in three days?
Best of luck to DC United and let’s see Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles at the Phone Booth soon.
What an awesome idea. Both organizations can use the boost and it looks like a win-win situation.
Caps Director of Season Ticket Sales, Anthony Aspaas, will have no trouble promoting this package.
